DEMARMELS, O’DONNELL, AND RAIN WIN AT BETHEL MOTOR SPEEDWAY

July 26, BETHEL , NY – Mike Alcaro has been dominant in the Legends division at Bethel (NY) Motor Speedway so far this season, winning six races in as many attempts at the speedway. This past Saturday, however, Alcaro’s winning streak came to an end as he suffered mechanical problems in the event which was won by John Demarmels.

Demarmels headed into the day never even having sat in a Legends car. The veteran driver, who has scored more than 80 wins and multiple championships in other divisions at the track, went to the speedway intending to compete only in the BMS Modified that he has piloted for much of the 2009 season. He was presented with the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Legends car, and the driver seized that opportunity to prove that he could find his way to Victory Lane at Bethel in yet another division.

Ron Poley and Mike Malone made up the front row for the start of the race. Demarmels came to the starting grid 11th. Malone seized the lead when the green flag flew, while Poley and Michael Blaskey fought side-by-side behind him for second. Blaskey was able to grab the spot, and Poley was moved back to third. Caution waved when Joe Fresco spun in turn four. Malone restarted on the pole, with Blaskey on the outside. Malone inched out front, but the two continued to run side-by-side, swapping the spot. Blaskey was scored as the leader at lap two, while Malone was first across the line by a slight margin at lap five. The caution came out again on lap six after Joe DeGracia spun in an incident that involved several other cars, including Alcaro. Alcaro headed to the pits and returned, only to return to the pit area and retire from the event with a broken spindle before the green flag was thrown for the restart. Malone and Blaskey again restarted on the front row and resumed their intense battle for the top spot as Joe Graf came to third. Malone moved solidly into the lead on lap eight, with Blaskey and Graf in tow. Three laps later, however, Blaskey used an inside pass to grab the lead from Malone. On the next lap, Kenny VanWickle took third from Graf. Blaskey and Malone began to pull away from the rest of the field, with Blaskey in the lead and Malone pressuring for the spot. On lap 14, Blaskey’s car went around in turns one and two. Malone made contact with the back of the car and caution flew for the incident, which also involved Graf, DeGracia, and VanWickle. Matt Maring inherited the lead for the single-file restart, with Demarmels and Poley behind him. Maring shot out front, leaving Demarmels and Poley to fight for second. Poley pulled alongside Demarmels on the outside, and the two ran wheel-to-wheel for several laps before Demarmels was able to take sole possession of the spot on lap 22. One lap later, caution flew for VanWickle, who had spun on the backstretch. Under the caution, Maring’s car came to a stop in turn two with a broken trailing arm. Maring’s car had to be towed from the track, and Demarmels found himself in the lead for the final two-lap shootout. On the white flag lap, Blaskey worked his way back up to the third spot. Demarmels was able to hold off Poley’s attempts for the lead, including a last-lap effort on the outside. Poley had to be content with second, as Demarmels took down the win. Blaskey was third.

In the 15-lap 4 Cylinder Senior event, Larry O’Donnell returned to Victory Lane as he took down his fourth win of the 2009 season. O’Donnell won three consecutive races at the beginning of the season, the last of which came in May. O’Donnell started the race on the outside pole, and immediately took the lead over polesitter Russell Sniffen. Sniffen was shuffled back to second and was challenged by Paul Curry, who got caught on the outside as several cars passed him in the low groove. At lap two, O’Donnell led Sniffen and Ed Lindstadt. Lindstadt looked to the outside of Sniffen for second on lap seven, and the two battled side-by-side until Lindstadt was able to move solidly into the spot two laps later. Linstadt then set his sights on O’Donnell. Lindstadt made several attempts to challenge O’Donnell, but O’Donnell never surrendered the lead in his quest for the win. Linstadt was second, while Sniffen held off challenges from Diane Hughson to claim third.

The BMS Modified feature took to the speedway and seven laps were completed before rain began to fall, causing the cancellation of the remainder of the night’s program. The race, which was being led by Norm Barnes, will be completed at the start of next week’s events.

This coming Saturday, August 1, another night of short track racing excitement is on tap, as Bethel Motor Speedway will play host to a 50-lap INEX Asphalt Nationals qualifier for the Legends. The remainder of the BMS Modified race is scheduled to be run, along with regular features for the Sportsman, BMS Modified, ECS Auto Stores Pro Stock, Street Stock, 4 Cylinder, and Bandolero classes.
